Since 2000, Michael has been a leader in the El Paso Democratic Party. He founded the University Democrats at UTEP in 2001, a testament to his leadership skills. He then joined the Texas Young Democrats from 2001-2013, and during that time, he was elected as their President from 2005-2007. In 2002, he became the precinct chair of then Pct 69 (now 71), a role that further solidified his position as a leader in the party.

Michael was elected to represent Senate District 29 on the State Democratic Executive Committee from 2004 until 2010, making him one of the youngest members to serve on this committee. He returned to the committee in 2012 and served as Treasurer of the Texas Democratic Party until 2018.

Since 2002, Michael has volunteered and consulted with many local, state, and federal candidates. His most notable achievement was his role in the 2012 Obama re-election campaign as the State Field Director for Texas, a position he held after joining Organizing for America (President Obama's grassroots field program) in 2010. His work allowed him to meet numerous Texas Democrats across the state.

In 2022, Michael assumed the role of County Chair of our El Paso County Democratic Party, a position he earned after years of dedicated service. His journey within our party, which began as a Precinct Chair, Treasurer, and Primary Election Director in 2006 and 2008, culminated in his induction into our El Paso County Democratic Party's Hall of Fame in 2013.
